Choosing a size and pattern
The ESEE-3 and ESEE-4 are medium-sized fixed-blade knives for everyday field chores, camp preparation and outdoor cutting. The ESEE-5 has a thicker blade for users who prefer a more substantial knife, while the longer ESEE-6 provides extra reach for broader camp tasks. For lighter carry, the compact Izula has a skeletonized handle; the Izula II adds handle scales. At the other end of the range, the Junglas is a large knife suited to heavier camp work and clearing. These models vary in size and configuration, so compare the particular version’s specifications and sheath before choosing.
Materials and construction
Many ESEE models use 1095 high-carbon steel and Micarta handle scales, but steel, handle material and blade finish are not the same across the range. Some models or configurations use other steels, including stainless options, and handle scales may differ or be absent on skeletonized designs. A coated blade can help protect the steel, but 1095 can rust or stain if left uncleaned or unlubricated. Sheath styles and carry options also vary by model. Check the individual configuration for its materials and included sheath.
Background and manufacture
Randall’s Adventure & Training began in 1997, drawing on wilderness and jungle-survival instruction. That practical training background informed the ESEE knife line. ESEE-marked knives are made in the United States by Rowen Manufacturing in Idaho Falls. The separate Expat line includes knives made in the United States and overseas, so manufacturing origin should be checked for each Expat model.
