Popular Peltonen M95 with an uncoated blade

J-P Peltonen is a man who knows knives, but also the conditions where a proper knife is needed. The Ranger puukko knife Peltonen originally designed while serving in the Finnish Defence Forces.

The Ranger puukko knife M95 is an excellent military knife, but one that also meets civilian needs. It is a very typical Finnish tool designed as a versatile helper in the wilderness and extreme conditions. Many remember it from the army, and it is a familiar tool for official duties. Hunters use the Ranger puukko knife for processing game, and campers find it useful for campfire tasks.

The thick blade of the knife is made from 80CrV2 carbon steel, commonly used and proven reliable in Finnish puukko knives. The steel offers a balanced combination of hardness and toughness. It stays sharp for a long time and is easy to sharpen when needed. The M95 version has a blade length of 15 centimeters.

The TPV handle (thermoplastic vulcanizate) feels quite rubbery. The material is practically indestructible. It resists wear and impacts, chemicals, as well as weather and temperature changes. Additionally, it has excellent recyclability. Special attention has been paid to the handle’s design and texture. It stays grippy even with wet hands and holds well in rough conditions.

This version of the Ranger puukko knife comes with a leather sheath.

Peltonen Knives’ Ranger puukko knife M95 is both a wilderness adventurer’s friend and a professional’s tool.

Great edge, I never gave any sheath much thought but now I think they're equal to to the knife in importance. This has to be the nicest sheath I've ever owned.

My favourite iteration of this series of knives I think. I also have the Teflon coated one and the smaller M07 variant in cerakote. Long enough, thick enough yet slicey enough for all my general knife tasks including camp or home kitchen food prep and preparing smaller wood for fire lighting. It balances nicely, just behind the finger guard and feels nimble in the hand for a 6 inch blade. The leather sheath is well made and holds the knife well. The rubber retention wheel present also on the plastic sheaths which locks the finger guard in place to prevent loss is a work of genius! I love the way it hangs on a belt leaving the knife accessible yet not in your way. The plain carbon steel will take a nice patina early on with kitchen use. Keep it dry or lightly oiled and you won’t be bothered by rust. This longer version gives you 25% more blade over the smaller M07 version for only a 10% weight penalty. I used to be bothered by the ribbing on the underside of the handle. I was simply holding it too tight! Good value overall. The only knife you need? Possibly, but where’s the fun in that! I have 7, shortly to be 8, to really cover all the bases!

Simple and solid knife. Practical, without fuss. The sheath is cleverly thought out and made of thick leather.
