Description

The slim design and the exclusive choice of materials make the Boker Plus Kwaiken Air a classy crossover between a gentleman's folder and a tactical knife. To make this bridging even easier, the Kwaiken Air Mini offers the same outstanding qualities as its big brother with significantly reduced and thus more pocket-friendly dimensions. With a straightforward and practical shape, the modern pocket knife has become a true icon. The clean lines and slim design have been further optimised for uncompromising weight reduction in the lightweight version, although the knife still holds the entire blade when closed. The flipper ensures intuitive operation and additional safety, while the linerlock securely locks the ball-bearing blade made of VG-10 with an impressive hairline finish. The lightness of the Gentleman Folder is underlined by the high-quality titanium handle scales, which give the knife an extremely modern look. Supplied with a lanyard hole, a removable deep-carry clip (tip-up/r) and a high-quality nylon pouch for storage.

I was very anxious to get this knife and when it went available on Lamnia I got it first day. I always admired the Kwaiken line from Boker Plus and, based on a good experience with Laterallus and Urban Trapper Gentleman, it was my go to budget brand. So I got some more knives from them:Wasabi in M390 (another miss of Boker) and this Kwaiken Air in Titanium which was a total disaster. I knew it had some issues, but because I like to polish and refine my knives I assumed them, hoping to overcome potential issues. I was expecting the scratches, dings and sharp edges of the liners, but those can be easily adressed with some sandpaper. Because I wanted to polish a bit the handles in order to heat colour the titanium, I said what the heck... Let's get going. What I didn't expect was the following: - I was not able to properly deploy the knife without hurting my finger, there was something terribly wrong with the detent. After disassemble I found out that the detent hole was not round but it was like somebody made it with a screwdriver. I tried to polish the edges, but to no avail; - the knife could not be closed properly, it had a scratching sound and it actually opposed closing. Looking at the lock bar I noticed that it was curved in the middle like no other I have seen, like it was too long and they tried to make it shorter. After disassembly I found out that the lock bar was scratching the blade and at that point the detent ball was not touching the blade, or it did barely; - the lock bar was not engaging, it was actually hanging outside the blade and I could brake the lock with an easy tap of the back of the blade on my hand. Even worse, there was an up and down blade play probably because of this; - the liners were dirty and had corrosion on the back spacer area; - the screws are of awful quality and they strip easy. I have more than 40 folding knives and I disassembled most of them... I know what a bad quality screw looks like. This is probably the least expensive knife of my small collection so I decided to try to do something with the knife instead of resending it back. I hate to post anything. I tried to bend the lock bar, to knock down the corners that were rubbing the blade, and maybe to release the pressure somehow, also to address the lack of proper engaging the lock. In the end, it resulted in more up and down blade play... The action is still horrendous. At least I can use the pouch and who knows, maybe the bearings. I will never buy again a Boker Plus and try to stay away from budget knives, although at 100 EUR is not quite cheap.
