Helle

Two brothers, Steinar and Sigmund Helle started knife production in the old forge at their farm in 1932. The first set of knives was sold on a long trip over the mountains on a bicycle! Today, Helle knives are sold all around the world, but just as then, much of the production is done manually. The philosophy remains the same: no machine can replace skilled craftsmanship. Craftsmen with extensive experience and knowledge still take pride in making each and every Helle knife unique.

Helle Dyre Vaa Kebony

The Helle Dyre Vaa is a distinctive Norwegian knife with a story dating back to 1978. It became known as “The King’s Knife” after King Olav of Norway used one to cut the ribbon at the opening of the first winter road across Strynefjellet.

To mark King Harald V’s visit to Askvoll municipality, Helle created a limited run of 500 new Dyre Vaa knives in different variations. One of them was presented to the king.

The Dyre Vaa Kebony combines the unmistakable shape of the original model with a modern handle material. Kebony is stabilised beech that has been modified to improve its dimensional stability and durability while giving the wood its deep, dark colour. It absorbs less moisture than untreated wood, helping to reduce swelling, warping and cracking.

Its long, sweeping trailing point blade is made from polished H3LS steel and finished with a traditional Scandi grind. The Kebony handle offers a dark, refined appearance and a solid, comfortable grip.

Heavy brass fittings and leather spacers complete the classic construction. The knife is supplied with a shaped ox leather sheath secured with a strong leather cord.
