Choosing a format
The SERE family includes folding knives in several blade lengths, as well as fixed-blade models. Within the SERE 2020 range, listed folding options have 3-inch or 3.6-inch blades; the smaller format suits customers who prefer a more compact folder, while the longer blade offers more cutting length. SERE Operator models include both folders and fixed blades. The Ultralight Hawk, Falcon and Eagle are folding knives with listed blade lengths of 2.75, 3.15 and 4 inches, respectively, making size the clearest distinction between them. Al Mar also lists a rescue-assist knife with a belt cutter, glass breaker and oxygen-tank valve wrench; those features are specific to that model, not the broader range.
Materials and construction
Steel, handle material, opening system and blade finish depend on the individual model and configuration, so compare the product specifications rather than assuming they are shared across the range. One distinct example is the 4-inch SERE Operator Knife identified as made in the USA: Al Mar describes it as a collaboration with TOPS Knives. The rescue-assist model has a 3.5-inch D2 blade with a black titanium nitride coating and a safety-orange handle. These details apply to the named models only. The brand’s selection also spans folding and fixed-blade construction, so consider whether you want a compact folder or a knife with a non-folding blade.
Background and warranty
Al Mar founded the company in 1979. Its official history says he had served in a Special Forces Reserve Unit and worked in knife design before starting the brand. AL MAR Knives products carry a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and manufacturing, with repair or replacement at the company’s discretion. Coverage applies to qualifying genuine products bought from authorized AL MAR dealers and excludes, among other things, normal wear, misuse, neglect, inadequate maintenance and unauthorized modifications. The current warranty applies to models listed on the official site with AMK model numbers; the company says it cannot provide warranty service for knives made before January 1, 2019.
