Water resistant backpacks
Most backpacks are very resistant to light rain and, for short periods, also heavier rain. Many materials (such as nylon or polyester) are themselves moderately waterproof.
However, even a waterproof backpack may let water through in heavy or prolonged rain. Particularly sensitive areas, such as zippers and seams, are prone to leaks.
If you need a backpack that keeps your stuff dry, even in heavy rain, you should choose a backpack made of coated material. For example, nylon or polyester coated with polyurethane is quite effective in keeping water out. A multi-layer VX-21 fabric, for example, can be classified as very waterproof.
For hikes and other longer trips, it is often necessary to use a separate rain cover that can be pulled over the backpack.
