Juha Perttula Turku puukko with medieval sheath (limited edition)
The citizens of medieval Turku (Finland) dumped a lot of waste in their city. The dirt preserved the leather, and thus, we have found about two hundred medieval knife sheaths. Their simplicity and functionality are interesting. Therefore, I recreated one common sheath type (17 found) and made this limited edition of puukkos.
The typical features of this sheath type are the side seam and two slots for suspensions. The original loops were made of a material that did not survive (perhaps linen), so the reconstructed design is somewhat of a guesswork. This suspension works particularly well when a right-handed person hangs the knife on the left side, which was a common custom in ancient times.
The sheath matches perfectly with the archaic handle of my Village Smith Puukko. The puukko resembles ancient knives, except it has a superior puukko blade (ancient blades were softer and had a wide bevel from edge to spine). The drill hole in the handle is not typical for puukkos. However, many Finnish Iron Age knives had a metal ring on the butt, and some had a hole in the handle, obviously for a lanyard.
The absence of a finger guard and a long blade can be risky. Also, the sheath is dangerous because, like its ancient counterparts, it has only 2 mm thick leather and no liner. Furthermore, you may accidentally cut the side seam due to the absence of a welt. For these reasons, this puukko is only for careful and experienced users.
