Beschreibung

Basque axes are endemic west Pyrenaic Basque lands logger tools. Their roots are lost in history, they have had little influence from abroad, giving us this unique axe pattern. You can find two types of bit, the most curved is the classical one, it's named moon bit (ilargi ahoa) by it's form. It's specialized to get deep without getting stuck in the hard woods you can find in Basque forests. Straighter bit is used for softer woods, this bit type also has the same philosophy, sharp cheeky bit to bite deep and do not get stuck.

Hafting method is unique nowadays, it's safer to use and easiest type to hang you can find. The eye is conical tapered, the handle which has the same form but widens at the top, inserts from the top of the axe head and gets stuck by pressure. If for any reason the head loosens, it won't fly free from the handle, as the handle top is always wider than the head's eye. This hanging method doesn't need any wedge, it uses solid wood handle making it the strongest hanging system.

Jauregi is the last Basque artisan axe maker. His axe heads are casted, then he forges and heat treats each head one by one ensuring each axe quality is at its optimum. Axes are differentiated by their weight:

from 0.6kg to 1.25kg pruning/boy's axes known locally as Biscayne axes
from 1.5kg to 2.25kg felling axes
from 2.5kg to 3kg splitting axes

The steel is %0.45-0.5 carbon steel hardened to 55HRC, handle is made of solid beech.

I've had this beautiful 2.5kg piece of work for 2 weeks now and have been splitting cherry and hickory firewood into smaller pieces for my fire pit for cooking. I was concerned about the shorter handle as we are used to longer handles here in the United States but it did not bother me and in some respects allowed for greater control of the axe when splitting. I noticed a difference using this axe on the very first piece of firewood I split into smaller sections. The larger profile of this axe allows it to perform extraordinarily well. I have multiple splitting mauls and all of them are narrow compared to this splitting axe and now I am not so sure that is a good thing. The Hachas Jauregi to me splits better than anything else I have. The more narrow types of splitting mauls when used to cut firewood into smaller sections often kick the piece of wood off the chopping block if you don't strike it perfectly. But the larger width of this axe gives it more surface area and I found that is is more forgiving and split the wood perfectly EVERY time. I did a test of another maul vs. the Jauregi and found that I could obtain more pieces of kindling per piece of firewood with the Jauregi than a traditionally more narrow (not as wide) splitting maul. I have not yet tried splitting larger rounds. Handle = Now when it comes to the handle I would not rank these axes in the same category as all of my Gransfors Bruk axes. Gransfors Bruk does a phenomenal job crafting their handles. The 4 Jauregi axes I ordered each required some sanding to get them to where I wanted them. But to be honest aside from my Gransfors these were not much different than the quality I've seen in any other axe I've purchased, thus I am not going to drop a star rating because of this. The wood on these axe handles I think is beech. You can tell it is different from hickory handles but the grain on my handles is very tight and I would imagine it holding up well. No Poll = I was concerned that the balance of these axes would be such that I might have a harder time controlling the axe because the axe head does not have a poll. This is clearly not the case - even with a heavier splitting axe version. In my opinion, this splitting axe is already my favorite after playing with if for two weeks. I almost could have admitted this after the first piece of wood I split but wanted to be more objective and give it more time. I feel these axes are better suited for cutting, bucking and splitting the hardwoods I see in Kentucky than most of my Gransfors Bruk axes (oak, maple, hickory, ash, cherry, beech, locust etc.). I just acquired the Gransfors American Felling axe but have not had time to use it or to compare it yet to my Jauregi axes. Sharpness = the axe came plenty sharp for my preference. I could not shave hair off of my arm with it but it was sharp enough I didn't want to meddle with the sharp edge it came with. Overall = For people in the US, if you can get your hands on any of these Jauregi axes I highly recommend it! You will have fun and probably come to regard these axes as something you won't want to part with.

Very nice axe. It hits harder and firmer than a similar size american pattern axe. The edge is sharp and durable. the head was polished to mirror sheen. The handle is solid straight grain and I have had no problem with the smaller knob on the end. It comes with a very nice leather sheath. My only complaint is the handle feels a little short for the weight of the head. Maybe another 6" on the handle length would feel better. It splits better than the cheap hardware store axes I have had up until now.
