The heartwood ranges from medium brown to reddish or yellowish brown and may feature striking dark, almost black streaks. An oil-based finish can deepen the colour considerably, sometimes making the wood appear almost black.
This is a very hard and dense wood that can be demanding to work with, whether using hand tools or machinery. Its varying density can also make sanding somewhat uneven. The wood tends to produce splinters, while its large pores may require extra attention when a smooth, even surface is desired.
