Phyllite consists of mica and quartz, and it is abundantly quarried in Finland for uses such as paving stones. However, it is also used to produce sharpening stones. A honing stone made from phyllite is particularly well-suited for sharpening carbon steel blades. It can be used for harder steel grades, but this process takes more time. In such cases, it is advisable to use plenty of water.
