I thought I would have a go at making my own knife. The goal was to have a fully water resistant knife for the outdoors. I bought some micarta blocks and threaded stainless fixings separately, and I made a leather sheath for it too. It was a fun project, but took a lot of time. Overall, if I had the chance again I would buy the premade knife and have an extra day spare.
The steel takes a razor edge, and was very easy to sharpen on regular stones. Surprisingly so. It did come hair popping sharp, but I nicked the blade while making the handle, so I had to reprofile it. I went with a convex edge instead. Great so far.
